AI in Our Everyday Environments – Ethical Issues for Privacy, Safety, and Misuse
Smart devices are becoming an increasing component of our daily domestic living. We are growing accustomed to drive smart cars, wearing smart wearables and we are also getting used to the idea of smart homes where lighting, heating, security systems, and remotely controlled applications are networked and communicating not only with us, but also with each other. At the moment, it is estimated that by 2028 there are over 400 million smart home households globally [1].
What makes the residential building smart then? Homes that are called smart by definition are home or working environments that have the needed technology to allow the devices and systems to be controlled automatically [2]. Furthermore, these home devices may operate autonomously based on user set rules and can communicate with other devices in the same environment promising convenience and energy efficiency [3].
Artificial intelligence is becoming a part of smart home technology and other everyday applications e.g. in the form of virtual assistants and smart home applications. At the same time, smart home technology raises serious ethical questions: Who controls the data that is collected continuously at home? What happens if these systems malfunction or are misused? Does the inclusion of artificial intelligence in this technology make ethical or even practical recommendations for its users considering the smart home technologies’ limitations and lifecycle, for instance?
This article discusses the ethical challenges of AI in our living environments. The questions at hand deal especially with challenges concerning our privacy, safety and misuse of home systems.
Our Privacy and Data Management in Home Environment
Our homes are becoming increasingly automatized, smart, voice-controlled, and you name it, but most of all artificially intelligent! Smart homes collect vast amounts of information about their users: about their movement by lighting and motion sensors, speech via search assistants in home audio, energy consumption through multiple devices, and even sleep patterns by smart watches. While this data enables personalized services, it also creates significant privacy risks. If the information falls into the wrong hands or is used without user consent, the consequences can be severe.
- Example: A smart speaker continuously listening in our home could record (or make the audio environment transparent) our sensitive conversations. After all, smart devices stay alert for questions remembering our voices and stay logged in on services we are using while browsing for information online.
- Our first ethical question arises here: How much household data is acceptable to be collected, and who is responsible for keeping it secure?
The question is becoming increasingly complex, as smart devices around us are not only growing in number and sort but also relying often in artificial intelligence in their user communication. For example, a link from smart device enabling you to ask something online while driving your car or listening to music is often AI-assisted. In everyday communication with these devices, most of the time we do not realize it happening in the first place, i.e. the basic search engine question utilizes AI and keeps a record of our dialogue.
Okay, then it is easy to think that dozens of services and companies may store our information already: Nothing has happened to my personal data, why worry and how would AI in some applications change anything in this respect? We tend to place a great deal of trust in system providers.
In very clear terms, the technology applications’ owner should inform their users about the data collected, how it will be used, and if it is shared with third parties [4].
There are some basic differentiators here, where this rule can be difficult to obey. The underlying factor here is that AI in home environment is ever present. For example, when you place an order in online shop, it is easy to think that there is always a certain risk in giving your personal information to an organization and possibly to a third-party entity (shipping company and perhaps external companies that may send you advertising mails later etc.). While you are in your home environment in the middle of ordinary life, driving your car, browsing Internet, listening to music, using your home appliances, are you thinking about this risk of endangering your private information, private sleeping patterns, private conversations, and so forth.
Hence, from the user point of view, do we consider this as any meaningful risk at all? Mostly in our everyday life I dare to say that we do not really contemplate these factors often. Which instance might be interested in our conversations or sleeping patterns or what time we lock our front door? Well, we can imagine that there are risks at times, but often we are tempted to rely on our trust in these large companies providing our devices and related services just keep this massive stack of private data secure. This is something they promise, but with our trusted services, these security aspects have this little new extra notch: Artificial Intelligence.
AI may in some instances work through extra application in our trusted devices, whether it be copilots or GPTs or other, there might be this one extra app that we don’t even realize using. This is useful to bear in mind, we are continuously in easy reach of wiretapping, and this can be done by some application that we don’t always realize we are even using at that given moment.
Now, let’s face it, we have this multitude of applications at home, and they produce this ever-growing pile of personal data that we are not sure where it is located and how it is protected. Who or what instance should then be responsible for this information stack in the first place? As the user makes his/her precautions (meaning namely firewall, authentication, etc.), then we often as users point our finger to the application provider. This sounds logical enough, right?
So, back to artificial intelligence again, what is the role of AI in this whole scenario. If our trusted applications at home are working via some extra AI feature and/or application, would you think it has even greater responsibility in safeguarding your data as well? I think we are in the place where we have a growing interest to secure our private data and this needs to be done by application developers and providers.
However, there are a few recommendations that I can think of worth pointing out to AI application developers in this respect:
- Have clear options available to users on how to secure their private information. For example, clearly prompting privacy settings to users, so that we (as users) are able to go one little extra mile protecting our private data, such as discussions, photos, user information and so forth. For example, if for some reason, the user has not done anything in the AI application to view or alter their security settings, perhaps the application could prompt this on users occasionally. Having a few prompts about this matter would not jeopardize the usability of the app, but most probably would give many a better sleep at night (user has done their part, boxes are ticked and off we go).
- Pay attention to user education: how to find the settings where you can make your own decisions on how your private information is handled and where and under what legislation it is managed.
- In the case of third-party services, take into consideration that there are no loopholes in transitive trust, e.g. if AI application passes our private information onwards to another service, our information needs to be safeguarded all the way.
These suggestions do not make up an all-encompassing solution but may provide something extra that is easily done right now, and which may lead to even larger improvements in our private data being less vulnerable in our everyday environment.
Safety and Misuse
Smart homes rely on Internet-connected systems and are as connected to outside world as any smart device, making them vulnerable to hackers and misuse. On top of that, AI systems can also make automated decisions that result in errors causing harm or inconvenience to residents.
- Example: An automated locking system may malfunction, preventing home access in an emergency.
- Our ethical question: Who bears responsibility if AI makes a mistake or if a system is hacked?
Building on this particular concern, the question of responsibility becomes central. When smart home systems fail or are exploited, accountability is often unclear. Is the responsibility borne by:
- Manufacturer who designed the system
- Publisher of the user application
- Software developer who trained the AI
- Service provider maintaining the cloud infrastructure
- End user who was using it
- Contractor who has installed the system
This is quite a pick-and-choose task when the situation arises and unlike traditional household technologies, future AI-driven systems may operate autonomously and adapt over time, blurring the traditional lines of control and responsibility. There is growing evidence that AI diminishes our sense of responsibility as users for the consequences of our decisions [5].
Future AI integration into essential building systems bring something extra into user perspective and from the ethical perspective, this raises concerns about informed consent and user awareness. Many residents do not fully understand how their systems operate, how much actual data is being collected, or how decisions are made on their behalf. Expecting users to carry responsibility for these functionalities in complex AI applications is ethically problematic. This asymmetry of knowledge and power favors technology providers over individuals.
To address these challenges, ethical AI in smart environments must prioritize security-by-design, transparency, and clear accountability structures. Developers and manufacturers should be held to higher standards for safeguarding systems and communicating risks.
At the same time, regulatory frameworks must evolve to define responsibility in cases where autonomous systems may cause harm. Without such measures, the benefits of smart homes are at risk being overshadowed by ethical and safety concerns.
This viewpoint is important because, as often in digital technology, legal framework for safety and standards lag, and it takes time before governments and other legal entities are taking actionable and up-to-date steps securing the users in this perspective.
Ethical Decision-Making and Dependence on Technology
Future AI-enabled systems may make suggestions for users: in smart home environments this can mean, for example, optimizing energy consumption by giving suggestions on temperature settings or even controlling the whole heating system. While this increases overall convenience, it can reduce human control over daily life and foster dependence on technology.
- Example: A system may want to save energy by turning off heating on a cold winter morning when the electricity price is high.
- Ethical question: How can we ensure that AI decisions are fair, safe, and aligned with human values?
All systems that work with algorithms have features that need to be paid attention to, starting from their planning and deployment all the way to their upkeep and real-life implications [6]. To address these concerns, ethical decision-making in AI systems must be guided by transparency, accountability, and human oversight. Users should be able to understand why an AI system makes certain choices and to be able to override, or adjust, those decisions when necessary. This helps maintain a reasonable balance between automation and personal autonomy.
Another important aspect is the value alignment. AI systems are designed based on human-defined goals and assumptions, which means that biases or narrow definitions of “efficiency” may influence outcomes. For example, prioritizing energy savings (building is too cold) over comfort could create disadvantages for the comfort of elderly residents or families with small children (who would need rather warm places in building than make savings in heating expenses). Ethical AI design therefore requires inclusive perspectives and continuous evaluation of real-world impacts.
Finally, reducing over-dependence on technology is essential. While AI can support decision-making, it should not replace human judgment entirely. Encouraging user awareness, user education, digital literacy, and fail-safe mechanisms we ensure that technology remains a tool rather than an authority. In this manner, smart home AI can enhance daily life while still respecting human values, agency, and responsibility.
Finally
Artifically intelligent smart homes offer significant benefits, but also pose ethical challenges related to privacy, safety, and decision-making oversight. It is crucial to establish clear principles and regulations on how to protect users from misuse and errors. At the same time, we must consider how to maintain human control over daily life, even when technology makes more decisions for us.
Artificial Intelligence in our homes is not neutral — it reflects the values set both by its developers and users.
